"text": "Released on this day in 1994, and also Buddy Holly's birthday!\n\nOriginally written in June of 1993, the demo for the song, released on Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo, features a slower tempo.\n\nIn the liner notes for Alone, Cuomo explained how he was inspired to write the song after a friend from his choir lent him a Korg keyboard: \"I was in the Santa Monica College Choir and I met a kid named Steve Graff who lent me his Korg Keyboard. Inspired by its goofy synth sounds, I decided to write some new-wave influenced songs.\n\n\"The life-situation that inspired the lyric was an incident in which the Weezer guys were making fun of my friend Kyung He (also in the Santa Monica College Choir). "text": "The title of the track came from an experience that band members John Flansburgh and John Linnell (the Johns) had when they found a huge number of Ng listings in the New York City phone book.\n\nLinnell shares, \"I think I was collecting possible song ideas and, for some reason, I ended up looking in the phone book, and there were about four pages of this name that contains no vowels, Ng. I was fascinated because it's a name I didn't know about before, and it was filling up a large chunk of the Manhattan white pages.\n\n\"I called up some of the numbers kind of experimentally to find out how it was pronounced, and I got the phone machine of a Dr. Ng and I was kind of relieved. He had released his debut solo record, the three song EP This is Your Captain Speaking, in November 1981 on Crass Records. The producer of Women and Captains First, Tony Mansfield of synth-pop band New Musik, had previously produced The Damned's Friday 13th EP, also released in November 1981.\n\nSensible recorded demos of four of his songs with Mansfield, who then gave them to his manager who took them to A&M Records. He shares, \"I got a solo deal with A&M on the strength of a few tunes The Damned had rejected for being too melodic.\"\n\nFor Sensible, Women and Captains First was a musical departure from The Damned's blend of punk, rock and psychedelic rock influences. and reveals, \"Mansfield wasn't into the psychedelic guitar thing. "text": "The original trio of IVY — Andy Chase, Dominique Durand, and Adam Schlesinger — formed in 1994. Together, they released five studio albums, with their final one being All Hours in 2011.\n\nSadly in 2020, Schlesinger died from complications due to the COVID-19 virus. In memoriam of their bandmate, the other two reunited in 2021 to release archived demos and rare footage in the form of a tribute video. The band then began their reissuing project, releasing older versions of their previous records.\n\nThe reissue project allowed Chase and Durand to discover previously unreleased demos and tapes left by Schlesinger in their Rhode Island Studio, per a press release. “The world thought IVY was gone after 2012, and for a time we did too,\" shared Chase. \"And after Adam’s death in 2020 it seemed certain... So Dominique and I are thrilled to give everyone a brand new IVY album, with our beloved Adam playing on every song!\"\n\nAll songs feature fragments recorded by Schlesinger during the IVY period. The band's keyboardist and backing guitarist Bruce Driscoll also joined to go through the archives, rework the old material, and bring the original trio back together on Traces Of You.\n\n\"You can imagine how terrible it's been to lose Adam,\" Chase added. \"The only silver lining is that we could breathe life into these songs that he contributed to and it was a great experience making this record happen.\" https://tinyurl.com/2v9ysv9z"

"text": "Released on this day in 1987!\n\nDepeche Mode founding member and keyboardist Vince Clarke wrote this synth-pop landmark. Musically, it was inspired by \"To Cut a Long Story Short\" by Spandau Ballet, released in 1980. To that point, Clark wasn't into dance music, but the Spandau Ballet song turned him around.\n\n\"It was the first time I was actually impressed by a rhythm that went 'boom-thwack, boom-thwack,'\" he told Rolling Stone in 2000. \"It was the first time I discovered dance music for myself, and to write a song around the rhythm was quite a revelation for me. 'Just Can't Get Enough' came out of that.\"\n\nClarke had just turned 20 when he wrote this song, which turned out to be the last one he wrote for Depeche Mode. He left the band after the Speak and Spell album was released, later joining Yaz and Erasure. The \"Just Can't Get Enough\" video is the only one he appears in.\n\nEarly Depeche Mode, under the direction of Clarke, had a more upbeat sound. In a Songfacts interview with Vince Clarke, he explained: \"Martin Gore writes in a different way than I do, so that's obviously the main difference. And they've developed this kind of a rock feel to their music.
