Taking their name from an obscure song from fellow Scots Simple Minds, the Cocteaus were originally formed by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie and later rounded out by Guthrie's girlfriend Elizabeth Fraser, an utterly unique performer whose swooping, operatic vocals relied less on any recognizable language than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions.\n\nhttps://bit.ly/3G2WC14"

The members of the band stated that while working on 23, they aimed to be more \"spontaneous\" in their songwriting; \"for simplicity and clarity\"; and to avoid overanalyzing their compositions. Drummer Simone Pace said that he found it \"nerve-wracking\" to begin recording the album with only loose ideas for songs. \n\nLead vocalist Kazu Makino admitted that making 23 \"wasn't an entirely enjoyable experience\", adding: \"Without a producer, a referee, we could really get on each other's cases. Prior to that, the band was known as The Candy Thieves, and their only record included an early version of \"Homeboy\" and another song, \"Underwater,\" that fitted the then-current baggy trend.
