"text": "Former Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde, the head of record label Bella Union, was considering shutting the label down due to financial troubles, but after hearing a demo version of \"White Winter Hymnal,\" he was motivated to continue going on and signed Fleet Foxes to the label based on how much he liked the song.\n\nRaymond reveals, \"[A friend] sent me this demo of a track called 'White Winter Hymnal.' I played it when I went back to my room that night. This was when I was just about to give up doing Bella Union, if you could believe I would do such a thing, and I heard this track and thought, 'I have to sign that band.'\n\n\"That saved my life, that song. And I wrote to them that night, a very, very, very long letter and I heard back from Robin, the singer, within a couple of days.\n\n\"It just turned out he was in Norway too, visiting some family, we met up and we got on like a house on fire and here we are I suppose. "text": "Kevin's favourite album of 2025! Jacob Alon is a Scottish singer-songwriter born and raised by a young single mother in the quiet suburbs of Fife. Alon began writing songs in school as a way of making friends laugh, but never considered a career in music possible until much later. While studying medicine at university, Jacob found themself deeply confused and unhappy, only finding joy when making music. To the disapproval of their family, they decided to drop out and pursue their true dream full-time.\n\nNow based in Edinburgh, Jacob’s story is one of estrangement, homelessness, but ultimately, perseverance.\n\nAlon crashed with super producer Dan Carey while working on new music, of which an overarching theme will be limerence: the state of intense romantic longing for someone who often does not reciprocate. Engineer John Wood recalled that \"[Drake] would track live, singing and playing along with the string section\" without the use of any overdubbing.\n\nThe studio's environment was also an important factor as it had multiple levels to it which enabled the creation of interesting sounds and atmospheres.\n\nAmong his various backing musicians, Drake was accompanied by Richard Thompson from Fairport Convention and Danny Thompson of Pentangle. Robert Kirby, a friend of Drake's from Cambridge University, arranged the stringed instruments for several tracks while Harry Robinson arranged the strings for \"River Man.\" \n\nThe title of the album is a reference to the old Rizla cigarette papers packet, which used to contain a printed note near the end saying \"Only five leaves left.\" https://tinyurl.com/yad35w8a"

"text": "In 1993, guitarist, Johnny Marr, told Select magazine that he thought this was \"the best song\" that he had ever heard: \"I didn't realise that 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' was going to be an anthem but when we first played it I thought it was the best song I'd ever heard.\"\n\nIn the same interview, Marr revealed that the song's intro was lifted from The Rolling Stones' cover of \"Hitch Hike\" by Marvin Gaye. The Velvet Underground also swiped this intro for their song, \"There She Goes Again.\" \n\nMarr recalls, \"There's a little in-joke in there just to illustrate how intellectual I was getting. At the time everyone was into The Velvet Underground and they stole the intro to 'There She Goes Again' - 'da da-da-da, da-da!' - from The Rolling Stones' version of 'Hitch Hike,' the Marvin Gaye song. I just wanted to put that in to see whether the press would say, 'Oh it's the Velvet Underground!' Cos I knew that I was smarter than that. I was listening to what The Velvet Underground was listening to.\"\n\nThis song appeared to play and record itself. \"We did it at the start of the day,\" Marr reminisced to NME in 2011. \"It was an enjoyable 40 minutes. When we all got together, one-two-three-four, it was the first time all four of us had heard what it sounded like. It was magical. Before its release, the band streamed the entire album on its official website and offered a free download of \"What Light.\"\n\nThe band sought to be more direct with this record than the previous two, resulting in a more mellow album. Tweedy attributes the lyrical directness to his listening to material by The Byrds and Fairport Convention while recording the album. He disliked the reliance on studio effects on previous albums, saying \"I got nervous about the technology on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. "text": "George Harrison wrote this song and sang lead. It was released as the B-side of \"Lady Madonna\" and was Harrison's first song to appear on a single.\n\nIt's the last in a series of Beatles songs Harrison wrote that were influenced by Indian music and Eastern philosophy, following \"Love You To\" from Revolver (1966) and \"Within You Without You\" from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967).\n\nThe lyrics are a translation of a section of the Tao Te Ching, a sacred Chinese text dating back 2000 years that was written by Lao Tsu, a contemporary of Confucius. The text is a rendering of Tsu's accumulated wisdom; it forms the basis for much of Chinese thought and philosophy, focused on the spiritual aspect of life.\n\nNone of the Beatles played on this track; all the music was recorded by Indian session musicians at the EMI studios in Bombay, India, while Harrison was working on the soundtrack to the movie Wonderwall. Harrison come up with the tune based on how the lyric made him feel; he took the recording back to England, where his lead vocal was added along with John Lennon and Paul McCartney's backing vocals.\n\nInstruments used on this track include harmonium, shehnai, tabla, sarod, and flute.\n\nThe original release was in mono; a stereo version was mixed in 1970 and used on the Past Masters compilation.
