As she looked out of her window at the bare winter trees, the singer-songwriter hoped that with spring around the corner, she would soon get inspiration from her experience of writer's block. \n--\nWelch recorded the song in London with Glass Animals' Dave Bayley on production duties. When she played him her sad, acoustic demo, Bayley suggested adding synths. He transformed it into an energetic anthem reminiscent of \"Nick Cave at the club.\" \"Sometimes,\" Welch said, \"the biggest dance songs, I think, have a really sad core to them.\""

The full name of the song is \"Da Da Da ich lieb dich nicht du liebst mich nicht aha aha aha,\" which roughly translates to English as \"Da Da Da I don't love you you don't love me aha aha aha.\"\n--\nThe Volkswagen commercial that made this famous was called \"Sunday Afternoon.\" It starred two young men driving around in a Golf, picking up an old chair by the side of the road, realizing it smells and dropping it back off, all while this song is playing.\n\nThe commercial was one of the first to target a gay audience; never before did a car commercial show two young men riding together who might possibly be gay. The ad helped Volkswagen grow sales of the model almost 10% from the previous year. The ad was first shown on an episode of the TV show Ellen where the lead character, played by Ellen DeGeneres, comes out as a lesbian."

He passed away last year and you can read more about his life here: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/oct/15/dangelo-obituary\n\nDJ Premier, who helped to produce one of D’Angelo’s most famous songs in ‘Devil’s Pie’, wrote: “Such a sad loss to the passing of D’angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D’ Love You KING.”\n---\nSeveral samples were incorporated into this first single from D'Angelo's second studio album, including Fat Joe's \"Success,\" Raekwon's \"Interlude,\" Pierre Henry's \"Jericho Jerk,\" Teddy Pendergrass's \"And If I Had,\" INI's \"Fakin' Jax\" and Natruel's \"Big Daddy Anthem.\" DJ Premier produced \"Devil’s Pie,\" having first offered it to Jamaican-born rapper Canibus, and then D'Angelo."
