"text": "From Bob on Whidbey Island: \n\nOur son, Aidan, was an extraordinarily intelligent, capable, and athletic young man. As a senior biochemistry major at the University of Washington, he had received grad school offers from prestigious institutions and part-time TA job offers. In high school, Aidan won a state cross-country title, led a state-ranked soccer team, and served as captain for both sports teams. He was engaged in undergraduate research on non-silicon solar cells and mentored younger chemistry students through the student-led group, the Free Radicals. Surrounded by good friends, a loving family, and supportive research colleagues, Aidan seemed to have a bright future ahead. \n\nHowever, in February, he took his own life. Despite having two quarters remaining, he was awarded his degree posthumously and was second author on a research paper published after his passing. Aidan did not struggle with drugs or alcohol, leaving us confused about his departure. Yet, our overriding feeling is one of gratitude for the two decades we spent knowing, loving, and cherishing this remarkable young man. In honor of Aidan, we celebrate his love for Fleet Foxes. Please listen and remember him."

Today would have been his 92nd birthday. (I'm giving the full 92 years to him for good behavior!) It's so soon after his death that I really don't know exactly how this will affect me going forward. Clearly there is sadness, but at the moment, the overriding emotion is gratitude for both the length and quality of our time together. \n\nMy sister and I were with him at the end. He was alert and interactive with us as we played hymns as well as Miles and Wynton Marsalis. It was kind of like a movie script, truly a blessing. So I'll be listening with a different perspective today. Thanks to you for your contribution to the day, and to KEXP for allowing this opportunity for this community to support each other once again. Have a great show. As always, sending positive energy to you, and all those you hold dear."

"text": "'There's No Place Like America Today' is a record of its time, which has its own fascination; but it's also an album of timeless intrigue. The world it portrays is very cold indeed, and the comfort it offers is as spare as its measured, melancholy funk. But it's comfort nonetheless, something buried so deep in the music that maybe those of us whose bones have never ached, day in, day out, on hard city streets - and good for us, I say - can't really get to grips with it. \n\nRead the rest of David Bennun's review of this critical album here: https://thequietus.com/articles/17642-curtis-mayfield-theres-no-place-like-america-today"
