My entire life, he would sing My Girl to me with all the love in his heart. I was there when he died, suddenly, in 2021 in the middle of my living room floor. I was so paralyzed and overcome with fear that I was incapable of doing anything, despite my training. This fact still haunts me today. Whenever I'm feeling particularly down or contemplating something heavy, My Girl always seems to play just when I need it, as if to remind me that it'll be okay."

"text": "From Ashley in Portland:\n\n\"I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.\n(Hoʻoponopono)\"\n---\nChris Pureka has this to say about \"Hold Down The Fort\":\n\n\"I was a close friend of the late amazing poet, Andrea Gibson, for 20 years. We first met because we were on a bill together in 2005. We collaborated a fair bit over the years, sharing stages and I contributed music to many of their recorded poems. But more than that, we were very close friends and loved each other deeply.\n\nAndrea sent me some lyrics in 2020 that they wanted made into a song. The lyrics were about leaving this world and being grateful for the love they had. They hadn't been diagnosed with cancer yet...I wrote the song. For mostly superstitious reasons, the song did not get recorded and released until now.\n\nI timed it so that I wrapped up recording when Andrea was in hospice. I was hoping that they would be able to hear it. I won't know if they ever did, as that was the exact day that they stopped speaking. But, I sent the song to their partner, Megan, and she got to hear Andrea's loving words again, right at the moment that they were no longer able to speak. And that felt like a beautiful gift for everyone. The actual perfect timing. They played the song a lot in the room while Andrea slept and I like to believe that they heard it. (You can read more about that part of the story in today's newsletter.)\n\nI poured a lot of my heart into this song; ultimately a final love gift from them to Megan, and a final love gift from me to them. Sadly, of course, it was always my wish that our superstition would have paid off and that the song would have never been recorded. But now it is my hope that the song’s core message of love and hope and gratitude might offer some comfort to all of you who loved Andrea and their words and their way in the world.\"\n\n- Chris"

"text": "From Amber in Issaquah:\n\n\"I just lost my mom in August. On her final day in hospice, I spent time with her while she was unconscious playing some of her favorite music. The very last song that I played for her was Linda Rondstadt's \"\"Long Long Time.\"\" When the song ended I kissed her and told her goodnight. I got the call that she'd passed 30 minutes later. \n\nThe next day I was walking down a street in my hometown of Baltimore and stopped in my tracks. In the window of an antiques shop was a desk with two empty wine glasses and a copy of Linda Rondstadt's greatest hits on vinyl - and nothing else. I knew it was a sign from my mom and that she was telling me that she was alright. \n\nOurs wasn't an easy relationship, but I feel her with me always now - coming through with pure love and light - and the signs from her just keep on coming. I know it's a tearjerker, but I'd like to request \"\"Long Long Time\"\" as a way of sending my own sign back to her saying she'll always be loved and missed.\""

"text": "From Steph in Seattle:\n\nI'd like to honor my vocal teacher, Mary Pat Graham. I joined her class many years ago at North Seattle Community College’s Continuing Education program and followed her as she cultivated an ensemble called Sing For Your Life. Under Mary Pat’s empowering teaching, I quite literally found my voice. Turns out my old jr high choir teacher had it all wrong- I was NOT an alto, but a soprano that could hit a High C. During the time that I attended Sing For Your Life sessions, Mary Pat introduced me to so much beautiful music that touched my heart and soul in a way I’d never known. Pure joy was released in harmony, the sound & energy filling the room at each session, allowing us singers to leave the stresses of life for just a moment. It was exhilarating. I left the group when I became a mom and never made my way back. Covid came and then I heard that Mary Pat had passed away from cancer. Whenever I hear an old standard we practiced, I always think of her, and how I wish I had the chance to tell her how much she made a positive impact on my life."

He was a musician and always found a way to play music or listen to music. All music brought him joy. When he died unexpectedly of a heart attack 3 years ago I thought I might never be able to listen to music again because it would be too painful. The exact opposite ended up being true. Yes, I cry when I listen to music, but it also makes me feel closer to him. When I listen to the radio and hear songs that he used to play and sing (which is A LOT) I can hear him singing the songs and it brings me comfort."

"text": "The The's Matt Johnson wrote this song following the death of his younger brother, Eugene. In his depression, he found that writing this song was therapeutic for him. \nThe title is a paraphrase of a Biblical quote: \"Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.\" (Song of Solomon 8:6) Since the song's release, it has offered great comfort to the bereaved. \"I get a lot of letters about a lot of their songs, letters that move me to tears, but 'Love Is Stronger Than Death' in particular,\" Johnson told Mojo magazine. \"It's played at a lot of funerals. As a songwriter, it's the greatest thing you can hope for – that your songs move people and give them comfort.\" https://tinyurl.com/42vj6scf"

"text": "For Lauren in Greenwood\n\n\"Today (11/13) is the 29th anniversary of my father's passing. Pink Floyd was his favorite band and one of my most cherished memories is attending their 1994 concert in Philly. I'm requesting 'Mother' in remembrance of my mom who passed in 2023. Yesterday (11/12) was my 50th birthday and I miss them both dearly. I grew up in a house full of music and it now helps keep me connected to them. \nI'm a proud amplifier and consider Kexp my extended family. Thank you and much love.\""

"text": "For Lisa\n\n\"Thanks so much for this show. I can't always listen to it, but it's hitting me just right this morning. My husband died from colon cancer almost eight years ago. Our daughter was 9. She was mad at him for not making it to her 10th birthday like he'd promised. She was mad that she lost \"the fun parent\". She was right. I was always the more rational, organized one, keeping us on track. I would try to make a choice, and he was the \"why not both?\" parent.\n\nWithout minimizing the pain and grief, I can recognize now that he's still helping me. After Danny's death, I have become less afraid to try things. Less afraid to choose \"all of the above\". He's taught me that living is more than surviving. It's taking chances, following curiosities, diving into our feelings instead of organizing them. He was a musician. He was an Alaska Public Radio celebrity. He was the best dad my daughter could have ever had.\n\nThe songs on the playlist for the morning of his death were, by his request, Barber's Adagio for Strings, Grateful Dead Uncle John's Band, and Van Morrison's Into the Mystic. His gypsy soul is still rocking. He's still with us.\""

"text": "For Alex in Minneapolis\n\nGood morning John and Amy,\nToday is my first Mom Show since losing my mom suddenly last year. It’s my first major loss in life and I’m so grateful to not feel alone while I listen this morning. I take it as a sign from my mom that my upcoming spontaneous trip to Seattle, my first time returning since her death, is going to align with Death & Music. So of course I had to get a ticket, and I’ll be honoring her this Sunday.\n\nIf there’s time for a request, I’d love to hear Iron & Wine’s cover of the Flaming Lips’ “Waiting For a Superman”.\n\nhttps://www.kexp.org/events/kexp-events/death-music-2025/"
