The loss of our baby was sudden and heart-wrenching, but we channeled our grief into love for each other. Over a year later, we are best friends with our roommate's cat Onion and are daydreaming about two kitties of our own (which we will still be vaccinating!). "text": "A request from Sheli:\nIn the early 2000's, I met one of the coolest, funniest, smartest, most artistically talented people I have ever known. Her name was Vernia, and I thought the world of her. In 2008, she suffered from a psychotic break that nearly destroyed her. She lost many friends, lost her beautiful home that she had bought, lost her job, was violently assaulted by the police, spent time in jail, and worse that she never talked about. She would learn that she had a very severe form of Bipolar I, got medicated, and proceeded to build her life again. She went back to school and got a teaching degree, made wonderful new friends, and seemed to be doing so well--until she wasn't.\nThis cycle of destruction and rebuilding continued for many years and, each time there was a manic episode, we would fear for her life because of the terrible, dangerous things that she would do. In June of this year, our worst fears were realized when Vernia was murdered in her home.\nVernia suffered so much in her life, yet when she was well, she brought so much laughter, joy, and beauty to the world. Would you please play Heaven by the Talking Heads in her honor? I hope that wherever she is, she only knows peace after so many horrors."

Thank you for joining us for Music Heals: Grief, a day when we acknowledge the pain of loss and the importance of memory. We’ll be sharing listeners’ stories about their experiences and the way that music has helped with their grieving. If you wish, please text (206-903-5397) or email (dj@kexp.org) us with your own stories. Welcome! \n---\nFrom Angela:\nThis song binds me to my parents Tony & Linda - whom I've lost, but live within me always. And to honor the grief of loving someone who still lives - to Jake: without hope or reservation, the deep well of my love for you grounds me and, if that lives on unfulfilled, I will see you in the next lifetime. Yours, Angela."

They were deaths she saw coming for a while, and as a practicing Buddhist, she tried to accept the inevitable with compassion and patience, but I know she is grieving. She lives in Oakland and since KEXP's expansion to the Bay Area, sometimes she'll text me to say she's enjoying the music, and often I'm listening at the same time so it makes the distance between us feel smaller. I don't know if there are any good songs out there about pet loss; maybe you know of one? But if not, maybe \"Landslide\" by Fleetwood Mac? I visited him at his care facility every day, bitterly and angrily cursing the unfairness of existence, sitting bedside, shaving the unresponsive face, and helping to change the undergarments of a man I had rarely seen sit still much less lie prone. It's been nearly a quarter century since his body finally mercifully let him go, I'm older now than he was then, and I'd do nearly anything to have one more chance to attend to him one last time and celebrate the preciousness of moments I couldn't fully appreciate at the time. The grief levels off but, unlike all of us in our human fragility, it never fully passes. I miss you, Dad. I appreciate you so much, KEXP, and would love if you could play George Harrison's beautiful All Things Must Pass."

"text": "From Tyne:\n\nI'd like to request a joyful or uplifting song in honor of my friend Natalie. After living with advanced cancer for 5 years, Natalie departed from us peacefully earlier this week. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of us in the Seattle and across the world grieving her departure along with her husband, children, and extended family. She was magnetic, graceful, so strong, wise, passionate and tremendously kind. She was hilarious, clever and an incredible mother, wife and teacher. The grief is heavy because she was such an incredible person and we all loved her so much. Thanks for honoring her."

"text": "From Dan in Bellingham:\n\nYou guys are bringing all the feels this morning but especially John's story about going to Spokane to see his mom really brought me back to another hospital (in Omaha) where I visited my Mum (Sharie) when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I spent a week with her but had to leave and go back to work in Seattle and she ended up perking up for a bit before she passed. It was really weird at the time because me and my partner had rushed out there after being told she might be gone before we arrived but then, after we left, she was all bubbly and bright and sounded better than she had in years. We had a complicated relationship in some ways so there are layers upon layers but I still feel twinges of guilt about leaving before she was gone. I know she was fine with it and I know it was logically what I had to do at the time, but I can never fully shake it. But it's probably really just an outcome of all those other complications in our relationship that were left unresolved -- to some degree or another. So I just go on remembering that I loved her and she loved me so very much and that I am going to be OK."

"text": "From Nicolae:\n\n\"My Mom passed away in January of 2007. She had a rough time for five or so years prior to her passing. While Mom was a smoker and kind of a \"\"couch potato,\"\" she loved cooking, watching her \"\"stories,\"\" was a voracious reader, and she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. But she LOVED nothing more than seeing her grandchildren. The years of smoking took their toll and she developed COPD. A health related event robbed her suddenly of her sight in one eye, followed days later by the sight in her other eye. Completely blind. Lights out. Blackness. My aunt would read her crossword puzzles. She'd listen to tv. Feel her grandchildren's faces as they grew up within her dark world. \n\nI got the call that she was transitioning, on the evening she passed. I had the nurse hold the phone to her ear and told her I was on my way, if she could hang on, if she couldn't, I'd understand. We hung up, I booked a flight, but she passed within the hour. \n\nIt was a cold and cloudy January morning, as I drove to the cemetery. My Dad was with my Sister in another vehicle, and I was by myself, listening to a local radio station. The Sun began to poke through the clouds, and the song, \"\"I can See Clearly Now,\"\" came on the radio. The Sun completely broke the clouds, it warmed up, and it remained sunny and bright through the entire graveside service. That, to me, was Mom telling me she was okay! Requesting this song for Mom, Claire.\""

He was an immigrant from Egypt. Throughout his life, he had to navigate many difficult things but he always held that life was full of wonder. He loved this song. He respected that 2 things could be true-- that the world could be an utter hot mess but that it could also be wonderful. I remember him staring at an especially large and complex spider web. He said, \"Look at that. Look at how wonderful that is.\" So for all of us looking for some wonderful, this song is for you from me but also from my dad."
