"text": "It's been two years since my brother's death. You think you will be better. in a year, in two years yet this pit and void remains. I never ever thought about losing a sibling. I was so focused on losing my aging parents that when my brother left, I was left feeling a part of me hollow and empty. You cant imagine it until it happens. I try not to focus on the sadness of his passing. I try to focus on the fact that he is free, free from his suffering. I hope he is traveling and seeing all the beautiful sights of this world. I take him with me everywhere I go. Be free my brother. You will never be forgotten. - Julia in SF"

"text": "From Nick in SF:\nAlmost 2 weeks ago on October 27th, San Francisco lost what we called the mayor of 16th St. --our neighborhood's beloved bodega cat named KitKat. Kitkat spent the past seven years keeping an eye out on 16th in Valencia in the mission. They lived at Rhonda‘s bodega, keeping the mice population low and community spirits up. Anyone that ever passed through would notice Kitcat and instantly smile, especially if he wanted some pets. He was an overwhelmingly loved staple of the community in more ways that words can describe . We lost KitKat to a Waymo that struck him and our community's been left with a void that will take years to heal. It’s been a very special thing, however, to to watch our community come together in these times of grief and loss, stopping by the bodega to wish the owners peace and love. Our district's supervisor is calling for a new measure that would lead to community votes in our city to decide on whether or not these autonomous vehicles are welcomed or not. In this time, we’ve been reminded that our neighbors, human or animal; all belong here. We’re wishing KitKat a good rest up in bodega cat heaven."

"text": "A request from Jill in Everett, WA:\nMusic played a huge part in a dear friendship. I \"met\" Nico when I was in middle school through Metal Edge's Metalhead Directory (I was a hellion back then). She was a couple years older than I and we had not only common interests in music, but also writing, reading, movies, you name it, and became pen pals and even occasionally talked on the phone. Our friendship lasted through into adulthood, through good and bad relationships, marriages, kids, divorces, different email addresses, and various kinds of social media. In the nearly 40 years of friendship, we never got to meet in person as we lived on opposite sides of the country. We'd always wanted to meet in New Orleans at a Vampire's Ball, but we never were able.\nIn late September of this year, after an extended hospitalization, Nico passed away, survived by her husband and cats.\nThe day after her passing, after the initial shock wore off, I wanted to request a song on the Morning Show in her memory, but I couldn't think of one. Then John played Cass McCombs' \"Peace.\" The lyrics about not knowing when you would see someone again hit me and I began to bawl. It was the perfect song in that moment. If you can, please play that in honor of my dear Sis. I wish her peace, wherever she is now."

I’ll never know what was going through her head the night she left this world and as hard as it is to accept that, I try to hold on to the good memories. Carly and I loved First Aid Kit. I will always be thinking of her singing this song late at night as we walked along the Sound. I’ve lost a lot of people to suicide, alcohol, drugs, and their related impacts, and I try my best to remember them not in their pain but through the music we loved and cherished together. She subsequently found relief under WA's \"Death with Dignity Act\" in March 2024. The Death with Dignity Act allows terminally ill adults seeking to end their life to request lethal doses of medication from a physician. She maintained her incredible sense of humor even at the very end. After I learned of her terminal diagnosis I was crying uncontrollably in her hospital room - she comforted me with \"Don't worry, you won't be an orphan, you still have your father\". I was 45 years old and my dad was also in the room. Several days later, shortly before I handed her medication I listened to \"Tomorrow\" by James on repeat. Please play it for me today."

"text": "A request from Sheli:\nIn the early 2000's, I met one of the coolest, funniest, smartest, most artistically talented people I have ever known. Her name was Vernia, and I thought the world of her. In 2008, she suffered from a psychotic break that nearly destroyed her. She lost many friends, lost her beautiful home that she had bought, lost her job, was violently assaulted by the police, spent time in jail, and worse that she never talked about. She would learn that she had a very severe form of Bipolar I, got medicated, and proceeded to build her life again. She went back to school and got a teaching degree, made wonderful new friends, and seemed to be doing so well--until she wasn't.\nThis cycle of destruction and rebuilding continued for many years and, each time there was a manic episode, we would fear for her life because of the terrible, dangerous things that she would do. In June of this year, our worst fears were realized when Vernia was murdered in her home.\nVernia suffered so much in her life, yet when she was well, she brought so much laughter, joy, and beauty to the world. Would you please play Heaven by the Talking Heads in her honor? I hope that wherever she is, she only knows peace after so many horrors."

He passed away the day after our wedding but not without a welcoming and loving note to my bride on our special day - his last, “Welcome to this crazy bunch”"

I have great memories of that time in life and suddenly realize I'm the only one still alive to remember. Could you please play Silly Girl by The Descendents? That band dominated our lives when we were 13 in the mid-1980s, the same age my son is now. Go easy, Rob, Steve, and Liz."

I have very vivid memories of laughing and rapping to the Beastie Boys with him. Mountains Dew always nearby and far too much sugar. We were best friends from early elementary school on. He had a heart condition and a heart transplant in middle school. He unfortunately passed when we were 19. It defined my adult life. 24 years later and he’s still very much a part of my life and memories. I finally got a tattoo of his handwriting this year too."

Even when you cannot be by my side, I will forever look for you everywhere I go. My sheltering tree. The love of my life and the loss of my life. I am splintered without you."

"text": "From Sheila in West Seattle:\n\nKevin, a dear friend of mine lost both of her elderly cats over the weekend. They were deaths she saw coming for a while, and as a practicing Buddhist, she tried to accept the inevitable with compassion and patience, but I know she is grieving. She lives in Oakland and since KEXP's expansion to the Bay Area, sometimes she'll text me to say she's enjoying the music, and often I'm listening at the same time so it makes the distance between us feel smaller. I don't know if there are any good songs out there about pet loss; maybe you know of one? But if not, maybe \"Landslide\" by Fleetwood Mac? Because change is inevitable, that's one of the teachings of Buddhism that resonates even for me as a non-Buddhist."

"text": "From Leon in Colorado:\n\nShortly after my father's 49th birthday the vehicle he was driving was struck head-on by an 18-wheeler, rendering him comatose, a state he never recovered from despite clinging to life for another 5 months. I visited him at his care facility every day, bitterly and angrily cursing the unfairness of existence, sitting bedside, shaving the unresponsive face, and helping to change the undergarments of a man I had rarely seen sit still much less lie prone. It's been nearly a quarter century since his body finally mercifully let him go, I'm older now than he was then, and I'd do nearly anything to have one more chance to attend to him one last time and celebrate the preciousness of moments I couldn't fully appreciate at the time. The grief levels off but, unlike all of us in our human fragility, it never fully passes. I miss you, Dad. I appreciate you so much, KEXP, and would love if you could play George Harrison's beautiful All Things Must Pass."
