"text": "For Evie\n\nMy request is for We'll Meet Again in honor of my mother who passed in 2002. Her health had been declining on the very slow path of Parkinson's. She finally succumbed due to complications from experimental brain surgery she had volunteered for. She was like that, she had a strong belief in the \"Good of the Many.\" The researchers at UCLA were working on an implanted device that would function to alleviate and possibly cure Parkinson's symptoms. UCLA was Mom's alma matter and she gave back in a big way! On that final night, she told the assisted living care person that her daughter, Evie, would be coming over to help her pack for going off to college. UCLA? I believe that time is an illusion and that in some hard to believe way, she was speaking the truth. She knew her life was ending and she knew that I was going to help with her. I could just imagine myself coming to her on that night and reassuring her that I would accompany her on her journey to the other side and that it is a good place to be. \nMy mother loved to sing and I remember her singing We'll Meet Again. This was a song a recorded in 1939 song by English singer Vera Lynn."

We met in graduate school: me from northern Minnesota, she from Shanxi Province in China. Despite the geographic and cultural differences, we quickly discovered that we had common spirits, and were sympathetically aligned on all the big questions. We were together thirty years and raised a daughter and a son, both young adults now: accomplished and admirable humans of whom we are proud. \n\nThe grief has transformed over the passing years, with the feelings now best described as gratitude, for the most part (though the feelings of loss are always there, too). Would you please play Cassandra Wilson's \"Closer to You\" and send it out to the love of my life, Jinhong, who passed in February 2020. Jinhong was an accomplished scientist, dedicated to bringing anti-cancer therapies from the research bench to the clinic. She was a talented musician, a loving mother, daughter, sister. "text": "For Sophie in Seattle\n\ntoday i am thinking about my grandmother, who was my last-standing grandparent by almost 15 years and the matriarch of the family in so many ways. she died not from covid but during the first month of the pandemic, while I was living across an ocean, separated from many of my coping strategies during a strict lockdown and unable to attend the funeral or be alongside family during the loss. my family cleaned out her house soon after, which had been a central part of our life for decades, and i came back to her Brooklyn College sweatshirt on my childhood bed. \n\nbefore I left to live in the UK in the last year of her life, she pulled out one of her earrings for me to wear, and we each wore one of them a sea apart. when I visited for the holidays a couple months before she passed - a last minute decision I am so glad I made - she gave me the second earring she'd been wearing, baring herself of her belongings near the end of her life. I have a beautiful video from that visit of my mom and my grandma singing Que Sera Sera together. My whole life I loved listening to them sing and am so glad I have that memory recorded. I'd love to hear that song if you're able and will imagine my grandmother singing alongside it. thank you so much for this beautiful day."

"text": "For Vanessa\n\nI lost my big sister and best friend to neuroendocrine cancer in 2024. I was so blessed to have had a big sister who positively influenced me in so many ways and truly shaped the person that I am. She shared her love of music with me and opened my eyes to so many artists. I will always remember studying her vinyl collection, dancing together to PJ Harvey and blasting music in her VW bus. My grief has turned to gratitude. I have our past memories, but I really miss the fact that I cannot create anymore memories with her. She was a night owl, always said \"the nighttime is the right time.\" Her favorite artist was Patty Smith. "text": "For Brian in Eugene, OR\n\nIn 2021 I rode bikes with a group of friends through the Oregon ghost towns. Our dear friend Dana lost his sister just prior to this trip and I had recently lost my amazing mother Pat. One night after a hard day of riding, we sat above a beautiful canyon in the painted hills as I played \"Do your Realize\" by the Flaming lips. We collectively wept and grieved not just for those that we had recently lost, but also for the good fortune that we had each other to prop each other up. Without friends like these, I don't know how living through grief would be bearable."
