"text": "The The's Matt Johnson wrote this song following the death of his younger brother, Eugene. In his depression, he found that writing this song was therapeutic for him. \nThe title is a paraphrase of a Biblical quote: \"Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.\" (Song of Solomon 8:6) Since the song's release, it has offered great comfort to the bereaved. \"I get a lot of letters about a lot of their songs, letters that move me to tears, but 'Love Is Stronger Than Death' in particular,\" Johnson told Mojo magazine. \"It's played at a lot of funerals. As a songwriter, it's the greatest thing you can hope for – that your songs move people and give them comfort.\" https://tinyurl.com/42vj6scf"

Pink Floyd was his favorite band and one of my most cherished memories is attending their 1994 concert in Philly. I'm requesting 'Mother' in remembrance of my mom who passed in 2023. Yesterday (11/12) was my 50th birthday and I miss them both dearly. "text": "For Lisa\n\n\"Thanks so much for this show. I can't always listen to it, but it's hitting me just right this morning. My husband died from colon cancer almost eight years ago. Our daughter was 9. She was mad at him for not making it to her 10th birthday like he'd promised. She was mad that she lost \"the fun parent\". She was right. I was always the more rational, organized one, keeping us on track. I would try to make a choice, and he was the \"why not both?\" parent.\n\nWithout minimizing the pain and grief, I can recognize now that he's still helping me. After Danny's death, I have become less afraid to try things. Less afraid to choose \"all of the above\". He's taught me that living is more than surviving. It's taking chances, following curiosities, diving into our feelings instead of organizing them. He was a musician. He was an Alaska Public Radio celebrity. He was the best dad my daughter could have ever had.\n\nThe songs on the playlist for the morning of his death were, by his request, Barber's Adagio for Strings, Grateful Dead Uncle John's Band, and Van Morrison's Into the Mystic. His gypsy soul is still rocking. He's still with us.\""

It’s my first major loss in life and I’m so grateful to not feel alone while I listen this morning. I take it as a sign from my mom that my upcoming spontaneous trip to Seattle, my first time returning since her death, is going to align with Death & Music. So of course I had to get a ticket, and I’ll be honoring her this Sunday.\n\nIf there’s time for a request, I’d love to hear Iron & Wine’s cover of the Flaming Lips’ “Waiting For a Superman”.\n\nhttps://www.kexp.org/events/kexp-events/death-music-2025/"

"text": "For Claudia & Anggy \nI lost my sister, Maria (Anggy as we called her) in 2013 to an undetected ruptured brain aneurysm. She left behind 2 small kids and my 4 sisters and I devastated. Time has continued but I still feel a shadow of who I used to be. Life doesn't feel as loving without her and despite knowing its a testament to how immense her love was, there are days that are still very hard. I'd love to request \"I Shall be Released\" by The Band. As latchkey kids growing up, 'Jack the Bear' was a movie we loved watching. It's a story about a widowed father and his struggle to parent and survive with his 2 kids. 'I shall be released' was in the movie and it was our first introduction to The Band. My sister loooooved the song and bought 'Music from Big Pink to play the song repeatedly. Weirdly, the theme of the movie and her ultimately leaving by brother in law a widow with 2 small children instilled feeling like this was her destiny - leaving such a mark on all of us in her short 38 years alive. Thats likely me reaching for rationalizing losing her, but she certainly felt angelic in life and now in lasting memory."

"text": "For Gabriel in Florida\n\n\"I love the Music Heals show every year. In a world where we spend much of our time trying to distract ourselves from the things that move us, it’s a breath of fresh air.\n\nMy father was a miner and was killed by a collapsing mine shaft when I was 21. I hadn’t spoken to him since my mom divorced him and moved us across the country, just before I turned 16. As is often the case with 16 year old boys and their fathers, we didn’t see eye to eye on things. I was a rebellious skate punk who suddenly knew everything. He was set in his ways and had difficulty communicating without getting angry. When he died, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought I didn’t care at all, but I found out I cared a whole lot.\n\nNow, I’m a father of 2 teenage girls, and as you know, once you’re a parent, you understand the difficulty of parenting a lot better, and start to understand/forgive your own parents. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to talk to my dad and work through those things. One thing I’ve always appreciated from him is sharing his love of music with me. Some of my 1st memories are of me playing all of his old records when I was a kid (Donovan, CSNY, Beatles, etc.). One of our favorite shared artists was Cat Stevens. His song ‘Father & Son’ very much describes this contentious relationship between father and son, and for a long time I used it as a way to get to the emotional space to grieve for my father.\n\nIf you could play Father & Son, I would appreciate it.\n\n Thanks for all you guys do!\""

"text": "For Kristy & Michael in Olympia\n\nMichael Hukin was not only a Morning Show Faithful, he drank the caffeinated kool-aid from the origins. He supported countless community artists and venues tirelessly. He lived and breathed Seattle music. He left this mortal coil far too soon, before he could return to his PNW roots. I am still lost without him, but doing my best every day. John, you know he listened to you every morning when he moved back to the UK. You reconnected us and in turn, him to Seattle from afar. His family and my family are also proud KEXP supporters. A big shoutout to the MH and Morning Show Fan Club! Love, Kristy\tThank you for being a friend! Please play Ultravox VIENNA"

"text": "For Stacey & Juan\n\nI remember listening to the first Mom show from Chicago and being so moved. Every year I looked forward to it, I think to help with my depression and of course for the music was amazing . Then the worst happened my beloved partner, Juan was diagnosed with cancer. It was two year of ups, and downs, and two more mom shows that started to become so much more meaningful. When I went home from the hospital the final time, after he passed and laid in bed in the darkness of grief, not knowing how i would go on, I realized it was during the morning show and I put in a request in honor of Juan, LCD Someone Great. John played it and I just cried. It was the beginning of my grief and trying to start again. After a year of bereavement group I moved to Seattle. Music and the mountains have helped me heal and 6 years later life seems good but I will always miss him and will continue to greave. Thanks for all you do it makes a difference."

"text": "For Shane and Mindy in Chicago\n\nIt's been just over six years since the afternoon where my wife, Mindy, was traveling home by car from a friend's event when I received a panicked call from her that she was having difficulty breathing. As it turned out, something that she had eaten or drank triggered an unforeseen allergic reaction at the worst moment when she lost consciousness and passed away on the side of the road before paramedics could arrive. My life changed forever that day and I still miss her dearly.\n\nWe were both lovers of music and when I remember her, I often think of the random morning where our alarm clock went off and Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants came across the airwaves. As we both stirred from our slumber, we began to each sing the song's jovial lyrics until we were awake, smiling, and laughing together to start our day.\n\nMindy was the love of my life and I miss her every day. Can you please help me remember her spirit today by playing some TMBG as I recall that magical morning?"
