"text": "Will Toledo, of Seattle-based Car Seat Headrest, wanted the band’s latest release to be a concept album in the tradition of a rock opera. \n\nToledo self-produced this album, which has a wide range of influences, including Shakespeare, Mozart, classical opera, The Who’s Tommy, and David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.\n\n\"One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot,\" Toledo says. \"I didn’t want to sacrifice that to make a very fluid narrative. And so this is sort of a middle ground where each song can be a character and it’s like each one is coming out on center stage and they have their song and dance.\"\n\nCar Seat Headrest started out as a solo project from Toledo, but over the years has grown into a full on collaborative band. “What we’ve been doing more of in recent years is just taking the pulses of each other,\" says Toledo. \"We’ve really been leaning into that sort of cocoon that started off with the pandemic years and just turned into this special space that we were creating all on our own. I was coming out of it as a solo project and it always just felt like it was in pieces.\n\n\"There’s the album we’re working on, and then there’s a live show that we’re doing, and then there’s everything in between. And it didn’t really feel to me like things got in sync in an inner feeling way until this record, with that internal communal energy. It was released as the B-side of \"Lady Madonna\" and was Harrison's first song to appear on a single.\n\nIt's the last in a series of Beatles songs Harrison wrote that were influenced by Indian music and Eastern philosophy, following \"Love You To\" from Revolver (1966) and \"Within You Without You\" from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967).\n\nThe lyrics are a translation of a section of the Tao Te Ching, a sacred Chinese text dating back 2000 years that was written by Lao Tsu, a contemporary of Confucius. \n\nNone of the Beatles played on this track; all the music was recorded by Indian session musicians at the EMI studios in Bombay, India, while Harrison was working on the soundtrack to the movie Wonderwall.\n\nHarrison come up with the tune based on how the lyric made him feel; he took the recording back to England, where his lead vocal was added along with John Lennon and Paul McCartney's backing vocals. Instruments used on this track include harmonium, shehnai, tabla, sarod, and flute.\n\nThe original release was in mono; a stereo version was mixed in 1970 and used on the Past Masters compilation.
