"text": "Archie Roach was a part of the stolen generation a policy that ran from 1909 until 1969 where Indigenous Australian children were forcibly removed from their family by Australian government agencies, and placed in an orphanage. Roach wrote \"Took the Children Away\" about this experience in 1988, inspired to write the song by Elder Uncle Banjo Clarke. Archie explains the inspiration behind the iconic song:\n\n\"I thought, 'Here I’m writing for my people – at last a song that tells this terrible thing'. But non-Aboriginal people are coming up to me and saying it meant so much to them, because they didn’t have to be Aboriginal to understand the emotion of being separated from your mother.\"\n\nThe song became significant as it was released at a time when there was increasing public focus on the Stolen Generations. \"Took the Children Away\" received an international Human Rights Achievement Award, the first time that the award had been bestowed on a songwriter.\n\nHaunting video for the song:\nhttps://youtu.be/IL_DBNkkcSE\n\nArchie Roach speaks about the song, his experiences, history, and art in this powerful and beautiful video exhibition:\nhttps://www.nfsa.gov.au/collection/collection-stories/archie-roach-his-story-song"
