He is the first commercially successful rapper and the first to sign with a major record label. \"The Breaks\", a single from his 1980 self-titled debut album, is the first certified gold record rap song for Hip Hop.\n\nThroughout his career he has released 15 albums and is currently an ordained minister.  In 1979, at the age of twenty, Kurtis Blow became the first rapper to be signed by a major label, Mercury, which released \"Christmas Rappin'.\"  \n\nHe performed as an actor and in music coordination in several feature films including Leon Kennedy’s \"Knights of the City\" and the hip hop film \"Krush Groove.\" He was host and co-producer for \"Das Leben Amerikanischer Gangs\" (1995), an international film production focusing on the West Coast gang scene.\n\nAs host and associate producer for Miramax’s \"Rhyme and Reason,\" he gave an informative account of the status of hip hop, while he participated in the three volume record release \"The History Of Rap\" for Rhino Records in 1998. (Laughs) I said, 'Uh, I’ll try to write it, but I’ve never written a song on assignment.' So it took me a while to think about.\n\n\"The first time I heard Janis Joplin’s version was right after she died. Leeb was an early member of industrial music pioneers Skinny Puppy, but after he left in 1986 he went on to create his own project, Front Line Assembly, with collaborator Michael Balch. Later, the two worked on the side project Delerium and released their first album, Faces, Forms & Illusions. After Balch left both Front Line Assembly and Delerium, Leeb worked with Rhys Fulber, and the two released several albums under the Delerium moniker; these years saw a gradual stylistic change from darker ambient to a more danceable sound.\n\nGuest musicians on the album include Sarah McLachlan (\"Silence\"), Lisa Gerrard (\"Forgotten Worlds\"), Kristy Thirsk (\"Enchanted\", \"Lamentation\", \"Wisdom\", \"'Til The End Of Time\"), Jacqui Hunt (\"Euphoria (Firefly)\"), Greg Reely, and Camille Henderson (\"Duende\").\n\nThe album took around a year to record and assemble.\n\nGregorian chants were recorded especially for the project; according to Bill Leeb, it was less expensive to hire a 30-piece choir, rent a West-Vancouver church, move the equipment and record the chants live than to pay for the rights to sample existing recordings. https://tinyurl.com/26569yxk"

                    "text": "Released on this day in 1997!\nLead singer Richard Ashcroft wrote the lyrics, which are a somber look at the ennui of everyday life: \"You're a slave to money, then you die.\"\n\nAt this point in his career, Ashcroft had learned that money and happiness were not synonymous. \"People have been sold a lottery dream in life that money solves everyone's problems,\" he shared. \"Suddenly you're looking at people and you're thinking, 'I know they need X but if I give X then that relationship that should have died years ago is going to carry on and spoil.'
