"text": "#447--Best Opening Tracks\n--\nThe record crackles to life with the one-two punch of the title track and “Fuel.” “…Castle” opens tentatively, just a girl and her banjo-riffic tenor guitar, as Ani sets the scene; “In a coffee shop in a city, which is every coffee shop in every city, on a day which is every day, I pick up a magazine, which is every magazine, read a story, then forgot it right away.” Before she can even exhale, the band leaps into the fray, the arrangement accelerates as punchy horns and roiling bass strut atop a see-saw beat. Cleverly couching her scathing commentary in this joyful noise, she rails against complacency, homophobia and false perceptions. As usual her wry sense of humor commands center-stage. "text": "#448 in the countdown of best opening tracks, chosen by KEXP listeners..\n--\nAdrianne Lenker wrote the song at Studio In The Clouds, a recording retreat facility located just outside the ski resort of Telluride, Colorado. She sweetly insists throughout the tune that change is inevitable and vital.\n\n\"Most songs I write I don't understand them until later,\" she admitted to Uncut magazine. \"It really doesn't feel like I'm writing them. I feel like I'm receiving them. It's like I'm becoming translucent, my body disappears. There's stuff from outside of me. And stuff within me and it mixes into this river and it just moves through.\"\n\n\"When that happens,\" she added, \"it's euphoric: woah, holy crap! It's just a crazy feeling. At first it feels like a heaviness, a pressure inside, a yearning that I need to sit with a guitar. 'Change' came out in one swoop.\"\n\nWithin an hour of Lenker writing \"Change\" she and drummer/producer James Krivchenia were playing the track. Within the next hour they'd recorded it."
