Inspired by the energy and ferocity (and politics) of fellow Detroit bands the MC5, The Stooges, and Alice Cooper, their sound developed into raw-but-precise proto-punk and began recording an album. \nIn strong support of the band’s music but concerned about their very anti-commercial name, Clive Davis asked the Hackneys to change the name, but the band (and especially guitarist David Hackney) steadfastly refused. Davis ended the studio sessions and pulled all financial support for the band. An album was not released until 2009.\n\nhttps://www.dragcity.com/artists/death"

Soon afterwards Bell was drafted into the U.S. Army and began serving in Vietnam. The song became a hit in Houston, and sold a million copies by the next year. The line in \"Tighten Up\", \"we dance just as good as we walk\" was a little ironic, given that Bell had been shot in the leg and was consigned to a military hospital bed at the time.\n\nWatch them play it live in 1968: https://youtu.be/11Wd1cc31xI"
